Calm money until payday

A mobile app for people who run out of money before payday. Instead of a budget to manage, Ease shows one number: what is safe to spend today.

Calm money until payday
01

Overview

The idea

Pace, not budget.

Most people who run short before payday aren't reckless. Payday money feels like it's all available, small buys add up unseen, and by the time they check their balance it's already low.Budgeting apps answer this with categories, envelopes and charts. For a stressed person that feels like homework, so they stop opening the app. Ease takes the opposite route: one calm number for today, a gentle heads-up when the pace drifts, and three simple fixes when it does.Safe to spend today = (money left − bills still to pay − buffer) ÷ days to paydayUnspent money rolls into tomorrow. Everything else in the app exists to keep that number honest.

02

Why people run short05

Five causes to find out for each person. The app adds no shame to any of them.

01

Low or irregular income

Not enough, or not steady.

02

Invisible spending

Small buys add up unseen.

03

Bunched-up bills

Rent and fees land together.

04

Emotional spending

Social and stress purchases.

05

No buffer

One shock breaks the month.

03

What people use now

Seven kinds of tools. Most record money or lend it. Few help pace it.

The gap

One simple daily number, plus a reason why the shortfall happens. A hypothesis until a survey and interviews confirm it.

04

Who it's for04

Four provisional personas. Ayaan and Rina come first, then Tareq and Mim.

Ayaan, 24

Early career, monthly salary
Primary
“I'm not reckless, I just don't see the money disappearing.”
Pain
Broke by week three. Budget apps feel like homework.
Needs
An effortless view, gentle limits, awareness of social spending.

Rina, 38

Family provider, shared household
Primary
“Everything is planned until one thing is not.”
Pain
Medical or school costs wipe out the last two weeks. Tools assume one person.
Needs
A bill calendar, an emergency buffer, reminders.

Tareq, 29

Gig worker, often paid in cash
Secondary
“Some days I'm rich, some days I'm nothing.”
Pain
No payday. Monthly budgets don't fit his life.
Needs
Income smoothing, a bad-week buffer, quick offline logging.

Mim, 20

Student, allowance and tutoring
Secondary
“First week I'm a king, last week I'm a monk.”
Pain
Spends early, rations late. Split bills cause confusion.
Needs
Simple pacing and split-bill tracking.
05

One pay cycle, felt

Ayaan's mood slides downhill across the month. The best chances to help are payday and week two, before worry turns into stress.

  1. ReliefPayday

    Set up a plan

  2. ConfidentWeek 1

    Gentle pace feedback

  3. UnawareWeek 2

    Mid-cycle check-in

  4. WorriedWeek 3

    Early warning

  5. StressedFinal days

    Rescue, no judgment

06

Five rules for every screen

  1. Calm, never shaming

Money stress is already high. No red alarms, no guilt.

  2. One number

Safe to spend today beats a complex budget.

  3. Minimal effort

Anything over 10 seconds a day gets abandoned, so logging a spend takes three taps.

  4. Honest

No hidden fees and no dark patterns. Estimates are labelled as estimates.

  5. Real life

Irregular pay, cash and family duties are the normal case, not edge cases.

07

The core: one number

The Today tab leads with the safe amount and a status in a word and a color: On pace, Getting tight or Needs a plan. A three-step tour introduces it once, then gets out of the way.

08

Setup in about two minutes

Income type, take-home pay, bills, then how data gets in. Variable pay plans on a low month, not the best one. Connecting apps is optional and read-only; typing it in yourself is a first-class choice.

09

The daily loop

Quick add is a number pad, then a category. Saving updates the safe amount instantly and shows a toast with Undo for five seconds.

10

Warn early, never shame

When the forecast says money runs out early, Ease shows the reason and three fixes, at most once a day. “Remind me tomorrow” snoozes it.

How Ease talks

“Warning: low funds!”“At this pace, money may run out 4 days early. Adjust?”
“You failed your budget.”“Today is tighter than planned. Here is a simple fix.”
11

Plan, bills and buffer

The Plan tab shows where the money goes this cycle, a bill calendar so bunched-up bills are visible early, and a small buffer kept aside for surprises.

12

When things go wrong

Rescue mode builds a short essentials-only plan that gets you to payday. A late salary can stretch the plan with part of the buffer. No loans, no advances, no debt offers.

13

Earn trust before asking for data

A money app has to earn trust first. Permissions are explained before they're asked, connections can be removed any time, and Ease never moves money or sells data. Duplicate spends ask before merging.

Dark patterns Ease will never use

Forced debt offersGuilt notificationsHidden feesConfusing opt-outsSelling data
14

Every state, and beyond the app

Empty, loading and error states are designed, not left blank. The number also lives outside the app, on a home screen widget, the lock screen and a short weekly summary.

15

Design system

Light mode only. Plus Jakarta Sans for headings and numbers, DM Sans for body. A lime, cream and navy palette, 4-point spacing, 48px minimum tap targets, and status that always pairs a word with a color, never color alone.
